DIY tips:
I prefer acrylic paint, spray paint, distressed ink or wood stain for my projects, but anything goes!
I use acrylic markers, furniture repair markers (for the outside edges), and even Sharpie markers! 
I use Modge Podge as a sealant but, any wood sealant will work if you want a glossy finish.
Use one coat of paint for a weathered look or lightly sand the ornament before sealing.
I use Gorilla Glue for wood but there are many more glues out there.  Just be sure it will adhere to wood.
 
Embellish with glitter, glass chips, confetti, metallic paint, etc.
Let your creativity run wild!
